Angels Landing is one of the most famous hikes in Zion National Park and attracts visitors from all over the world. Known for its steep drop-offs, chain-assisted climbs, and incredible views, this hike is a must-do for adventurous travelers visiting Southern Utah.

If you’re planning a trip to Zion, Angels Landing is often at the top of the list—and for good reason.

Angels Landing is a challenging hike that includes:

  • Steep switchbacks (Walter’s Wiggles)

  • Narrow ridgelines with drop-offs

  • Chain sections for stability

  • Panoramic views at the summit

The total hike is about 5.4 miles round trip and typically takes 3–5 hours depending on pace and crowds.

Do You Need a Permit?

Yes—Angels Landing now requires a permit issued by the National Park Service.

You’ll need to apply through a lottery system before your trip. Without a permit, you can still hike up to Scout Lookout, which offers incredible views without the final chain section.

Difficulty Level

This is considered a strenuous hike. It’s not recommended for:

  • Young children

  • Anyone afraid of heights

  • People with limited mobility

But if you’re comfortable with heights and prepared, it’s one of the most rewarding hikes in the country.

Best Time to Go

Spring and fall are the best times to hike:

  • Cooler temperatures

  • Better conditions

  • Less extreme heat

Summer hikes can be dangerous due to heat, and winter conditions may include ice.

How to Get There

Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is where the trailhead begins (The Grotto stop).

Most of the year, private vehicles are restricted, and you’ll take the Zion shuttle system inside the park.

If you’re staying in St. George, you’ll need reliable transportation to reach Zion—about a 45–60 minute drive depending on traffic.

Why a Rental Car Matters

Getting to Zion is easy, but getting around Southern Utah without a car is not.

With a rental vehicle, you can:

  • Travel from St. George to Zion on your own schedule

  • Visit nearby spots like Springdale, Hurricane, and Snow Canyon

  • Avoid relying on limited shuttle or rideshare options
